BLOCK PRINTING WORKSHOPSupport me to make my workshop into reality!
Hello, My name is Sen Mendez also known as Queen Sen Sen. I am a non-binary fat artist born and raised in Oakland, California. I am an artist who creates images of historical ancestors, celebrations of large bodies and visual storytelling as a way to dismantle systematic oppression among Indigenous, Black, Fat and Transgender bodies.
In partnership with ARTogether and Resistance Press Oakland, I am planning to hold a block printing workshop this upcoming fall and I need your support.
This workshop is a 10-week printmaking class inviting the local refugee/immigrant Oakland community with a creative space for healing and will be limited to a small participant group of ten participants for FREE.
Participants will learn and develop basic skill sets of printmaking using manual block printing tools, methods and machinery. Participants will explore relief printing as a creative practice for healing our inner wounds in a peaceful method. The purpose of this workshop is to show how our stories are not far from one another - Your legacy becomes our legacy. My intentions with this workshop is to offer a space for refugee and immigrant community members to learn how accessible relief printing can be and gain so much more than simply learning an art skill.
The cost of this workshop is $4,500 and we are seeking the support of our community to help fund and cover the costs so we could offer this workshop for free to the community members who can not afford it.
Your donation makes a difference! Thank you.*ARTogether is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 82-3045350) and your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Every donation goes directly toward sponsoring arts education programs for refugee and immigrant communities.
"Sen's artistry goes beyond the meaningful visual art that they generate and extends into how they hold space and teach others the beauty of block printing. In the multiple block printing workshop facilitated by Sen that I've participated in over the last two years, I've experienced firsthand how Sen. brings out the artist in everyone, including myself. Through the intentional way that they set up. space, through. sharing personally and from the heart, through providing individual support and guidance, and through carving out time for each of us to bear witness and be witnessed in the group, Sen. brings depth and healing to their work and the people touched by it. Since learning block printing from Sen I have consistently come back to it as a healing practice in my own life. I have created prints that I feel empowered by and excited to share with my community. I would not have done this without encouragement and support from Sen." - Laura Coehlo from Center for Refugees and Immigrants.
